The Sustainable Development Goals & Us

The Sustainable Development Goals & Us

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a shared framework for thinking about some of the world's biggest social, environmental, and economic challenges.

Adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the framework comprises 17 interconnected goals covering areas such as health, education, equality, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, climate action, innovation, and global partnerships.

At fortheworld, we don't see the SDGs as a badge to put on a website.

We see them as a compass.

They help us ask better questions about the potential impact of what we build, who it serves, and what kind of future it contributes to.

1. Why the SDGs Matter to Us

Our work is primarily digital, but digital infrastructure doesn't exist in isolation.

The systems we build can influence how people communicate, access information, collaborate, learn, organise, and deliver services.

That means our decisions can have consequences beyond the technology itself.

The SDGs give us a common language for thinking about those consequences.

They also remind us that sustainability is not only about the environment.

It includes people, prosperity, institutions, partnerships, and the planet.

2. The Goals Closest to Our Work

All 17 goals are interconnected, but some have a particularly direct relationship with the kind of infrastructure and services we build.

SDG 9 — Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.

This is perhaps the most obvious connection to development.city.

We build and connect digital infrastructure designed to help organisations operate, communicate, and innovate more effectively.

For us, innovation isn't about adding technology for its own sake.

It's about building useful infrastructure that solves real problems.

SDG 11 — Sustainable Cities and Communities

Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

The idea of a "city" is central to development.city for a reason.

Cities bring together people, infrastructure, services, businesses, communities, and ideas.

Although our infrastructure is digital, we believe digital systems can contribute to better-connected and more accessible communities.

SDG 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Digital services still require physical resources, energy, hardware, networks, and data infrastructure.

We therefore aim to build systems that are efficient, maintainable, and appropriate to the problem they are solving.

Less unnecessary complexity. More useful infrastructure.

SDG 13 — Climate Action

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Digital infrastructure is not climate-neutral simply because it is digital.

We consider resource efficiency, infrastructure choices, and the environmental implications of technology where these are relevant to the projects we build.

We don't claim that every digital product is automatically sustainable.

Instead, we believe better decisions can reduce unnecessary impact.

SDG 16 — Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Trustworthy digital infrastructure depends on more than good software.

Privacy, security, accountability, transparency, and responsible handling of information all matter.

These principles influence how we think about the systems we provide and the relationships we build with customers and partners.

SDG 17 — Partnerships for the Goals

Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development.

No organisation can solve complex global challenges alone.

Partnerships allow people, organisations, businesses, communities, and institutions to combine knowledge, resources, and capabilities.

That's why collaboration is built into our approach.

The best infrastructure is rarely built in isolation.

3. From Goals to Action

The SDGs are deliberately broad.

A small digital project isn't going to solve climate change, eliminate poverty, or transform a city by itself.

And that's not the point.

The value of a framework like the SDGs is that it helps us connect small decisions with bigger objectives.

A more accessible service.

A more efficient workflow.

A community that can communicate more easily.

An organisation that can spend less time managing technology and more time serving people.

A partnership that allows useful infrastructure to reach an organisation that otherwise couldn't afford it.

These individual actions may be small.

Together, they can contribute to something larger.

4. How We Use the SDGs

We use the SDGs as a reference framework, not a certification system.

When appropriate, we ask:

  • Who benefits from what we're building?

  • Could the solution create unintended harm?

  • Can we make the system more accessible?

  • Are we creating unnecessary digital or physical waste?

  • Can existing infrastructure be reused instead of building something unnecessarily complex?

  • Could this work contribute to a broader social or environmental objective?

  • Can partnerships make the outcome more meaningful?

The answers won't always be perfect.

But asking the questions is part of the process.

5. Our Commitment

We don't claim that fortheworld alone can deliver the Sustainable Development Goals.

Nobody can.

The SDGs are a global framework that requires action from governments, businesses, civil society, communities, and individuals.

Our role is much smaller - and much more practical.

We build digital infrastructure.

We want to build it responsibly.

We want to understand its impact.

And where we can, we want to use technology to help people and organisations do meaningful work more effectively.

That's what the SDGs mean to us.

Not a collection of colourful icons.

Not a marketing badge.

A compass for better decisions.
