1. Why Integration Matters
Most organisations don't operate with a single piece of software.

and many others.

Information gets copied manually.

2. The Digital Mesh
We use the idea of a mesh to describe how different parts of an ecosystem can connect.

Another may communicate the result.

The user doesn't necessarily need to know how all of those pieces interact.
They simply experience a smoother workflow.

3. What Can Be Connected?
The possibilities depend on the technologies involved, but integrations can include:
Data
Moving relevant information between systems so that it doesn't have to be entered repeatedly.
Events
Using something that happens in one system to trigger an action somewhere else.
Communication
Connecting workflows with email, notifications, messaging, voice, or other communication channels.
Scheduling
Connecting calendars, bookings, availability, meetings, and related workflows.
Payments
Connecting payment events with appropriate customer, billing, access, or reporting processes.
Documents & Reporting
Moving information into the right place for documentation, reporting, analysis, or record keeping.
APIs
Using application programming interfaces to allow different services to communicate programmatically where supported.
Not every system can or should be connected.
Integration is useful when it solves a real problem.
4. Designing the Handover
A good integration isn't simply about moving data from A to B.
We also need to consider:
What information should move?
When should it move?
Who or what should be allowed to trigger the process?
What happens if something fails?
What should the user see?
What information should not move at all?
These questions are just as important as the technical connection itself.
That's why we treat integrations as part of the overall infrastructure rather than as isolated technical tricks.
5. Data Minimisation
More connectivity does not mean more data should be shared.
Quite the opposite.
We aim to follow a data-minimisation approach: only the information necessary for a particular workflow should be transferred between systems.
For example, if a workflow only requires a booking time, there may be no reason to transfer unrelated personal information.
This helps reduce unnecessary exposure and makes systems easier to understand and manage.
Connect what needs to connect. Leave the rest alone.
6. Reliability & Failure
No integration is completely immune to failure.
A service can become unavailable.
An API can change.
A connection can time out.
A provider can modify its system.
That's why good integration design also considers what happens when things don't go according to plan.
Depending on the workflow, this can include:
error detection;
retries;
notifications;
fallback processes;
logging;
manual intervention;
and clear communication when something needs attention.
The goal isn't to pretend that failures never happen.
The goal is to make them visible, manageable, and recoverable.
7. Existing Systems Come First
If you already have technology that works, we don't automatically want to replace it.
Where practical, we prefer to understand what you already use and determine whether it can be connected to the rest of the solution.
That can mean:
Keep it.
Connect it.
Improve the workflow around it.
And only replace it when there is a good reason to do so.
This can reduce unnecessary migration work, disruption, cost, and training.
8. Integration Is Not the Same as Automation
The two concepts are related, but they're not identical.
Integration connects systems.
Automation uses those connections to perform actions with less manual intervention.
For example:
A customer submits information → the data is transferred to another system → an event triggers a workflow → a notification is sent → the relevant record is updated.
The integration provides the connection.
The automation provides the action.
Together, they can create a much more efficient workflow.
9. Human Oversight Still Matters
Automation and integration should reduce unnecessary work — not remove people from situations where human judgement is important.
Some workflows can safely run automatically.
Others require approval, review, or intervention.
We therefore consider the appropriate balance between:
Automation
Human review
Transparency
Control
The best workflow isn't necessarily the one with the fewest humans involved.
It's the one where humans spend their time where their judgement actually adds value.
10. The Goal
The purpose of integration isn't to create an impressive technical diagram.
It's to create a better experience.
Less repetition.
Fewer unnecessary handovers.
Better visibility.
More consistent information.
More time for meaningful work.
And infrastructure that can evolve as the organisation evolves.
That's what we mean by interconnectivity.
Connect what makes sense. Automate what should be automated. Keep people in control.
